Original Tunes by South African Composers.

A South African first and a must for all jazz players, this 168-page book includes 68 vocal and instrumental compositions, featuring some of the greatest jazz tunes of all time.

Play classic South African jazz like a pro, from songs like Meadowlands (Strike Vilakazi), Pata Pata (Miriam Makeba), Ntyilo Ntyilo (Alan Silinga) to Lakutshon’ Ilanga (Mackay Davashe) and Angola (Bheki Mseleku). More contemporary pieces include Genes and Spirits (Moses Molelekwa), African Eyes (Shannon Mowday) and Awakening (Marcus Wyatt).

The songbook includes an overview of local jazz history, as well as biographies and breathtaking photographs of the composers by Rafs Mayet and Tina Smith. Read about the events that shaped the development of jazz in the country and the immense opportunities the coming of democracy brought to jazz professionals in present day-South Africa.

My students and the local community absolutely love the music from the South African Jazz Collection. These jazz classics can be performed by musicians of all ages on different instruments and the history section and photographs provide insightful teaching material, exposing students to an important cultural development that greatly influenced the African-American diaspora. This valuable book is highly recommended for all jazz musicians and educators.
